Vegan breakfast tartlets with yogurt and fruits
By Aryane @ Valises & Gourmandises Leave a Comment
We’re back from our incredible honeymoon in Sri Lanka! We wouldn’t have mind staying over there for a few more weeks, recharging our batteries in the sun like lizards, but we had to come back to reality eventually… So we headed back home with our heads filled with memories.
And super motivated to get creative in the kitchen, just in time for spring.

Homemade roasted pepper hummus & tortilla chips
By Aryane @ Valises & Gourmandises Leave a Comment
Hummus is one of those things that once you discover you can’t get enough of. At least that’s how it is for me. I love it so much that I’ve found many ways to enjoy it other than with a platter of veggies. For example I often thin it down with water, garlic and a few spices and use it as a great mayo replacer (in sandwiches but also to dip my fries), as a salad dressing, etc.
I must admit though that most of the time I’m super lazy and buy it from the store, but it’s so easy to make that there’s really no reason not to. Unless you’re in Québec and have access to Fontaine Santé hummus, the best brand out there! Everytime I come home, I’m surprised and delighted by their new flavour combos, including ginger & sesame, kale & chia, Moroccan… Because really, hummus combinations are endless and the company understands most people’s passion for the stuff.

The best practical gifts for travellers
By Aryane @ Valises & Gourmandises
If the traveller in your life is anything like me, they’d rather spend their money on actual travels and experiences than on gear, even though it could make their life so much easier.
That’s why I’ve gathered a list of things that I either have and love, or that I wish I had, to help you treat that cheap pragmatic & reasonable nomad. So, just in time for Christmas, here’s a few of the best gifts for travellers.

Learning about veganism: a few useful resources
By Aryane @ Valises & Gourmandises
The day I decided to stop eating meat, I promised myself that I wouldn’t make this decision thoughtlessly and that I would do some in-depth research on all the different aspects of a vegetarian lifestyle. I wanted to do my part against the horrible treatment farm animals endure and act on my values, yet without risking my own health.
Back then, I had no one around to guide me towards the right choices. I had to learn everything on my own. Over the last two years, I’ve watched a lot of documentaries and read countless fascinating articles and books on the topic, all this in French, English, German… I found out that on top of saving animals, I’m now contributing to a healthier planet by drastically reducing my environmental footprint. I also discovered the multiple benefits of such a diet on my health, reducing my risk of cancer and improving the health of my arteries. I’ve tried new recipes, learned to love foods that I couldn’t stand before and acquired an insatiable curiosity for all things cooking-related…

Chasing rainbows in Galway – Part 1
By Aryane @ Valises & Gourmandises
Hey guys! I am so excited to finally tell you all about our trip to Ireland, one of the most memorable countries I’ve ever visited. A couple weeks ago I covered Galway, a small and colourful city located on the West coast. While it’s fairly lively and fun to explore, there isn’t much to do besides enjoying an evening in one of its pubs drinking Murphy’s beer or attending a festival in the summer.
Why did we spend more than three days there then? Well, the surrounding region is, simply put, stunning and should in no case be overlooked! It is a land of breathtaking scenery, sheep and magic. Oh, and did I mention the sheep? You’d think that one would tire of seeing them, but no. I pointed each and every one of them out to Martin, excited as a child….
Three days in Galway
By Aryane @ Valises & Gourmandises
We arrived in Galway on a rainy October morning after a 16-hour bus + ferry journey from London. Now you must be wondering why we didn’t just fly and save ourselves the trouble, but we’re trying to avoid flying whenever possible. It has just become way too easy and affordable and people often forget that it’s highly polluting, and increasingly so.
But the trip didn’t actually turn out to be that bad. We stopped for dinner along the way and even found yummy vegan snacks to go with the stash we’d acquired earlier at Tesco. Later on, once we boarded the ferry, we were even able to find a nice comfy spot to lie down for a few hours.
Galway, located on the west coast, was the much anticipated first stop of our 10-day trip to Ireland. We spent almost 4 days exploring Galway county, a long weekend in Dublin where we met Martin’s brother and another 4 days in Cork. In a fairly short time, the country managed to earn a huge spot in my heart, and I sometimes find myself dreaming about its fairytale landscapes. I hope my posts will be able to convey some of the magic!…

Café Frida, the first vegan restaurant in Trois-Rivières
By Aryane @ Valises & Gourmandises
When I walked into Café Frida, I immediately felt like I was in a café in Berlin, and I loved it.
I thought to myself “Finally someone dared to do something different.” Different from all the restaurants sprouting everywhere that keep milking the “urban concept” that only ends up looking super cheesy. Yes, I’m talking about you, Le Bureau de Poste…
Trois-Ri, you know I love you, we had great years together, but it’s time to innovate, it’s 2016. And that’s precisely what the team behind Café Frida has done. It’s the first vegetarian restaurant in Trois-Rivières. The owners also run another place called Éléphant, but I didn’t get the chance to go during my short stay.
